hygienerating.co.uk makes official food hygiene ratings easy to search and tracks when they change.
Where the data comes from
Ratings are published by every local council in the UK through the Food Standards Agency's Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (the Food Hygiene Information Scheme in Scotland) and made available as open data. We refresh our copy every week and compare it with the previous week to spot changes.
About one business in ten has a street address but no map location from the FSA. To list what's nearby, we place these by their postcode: where another business has the same postcode, at its location, and otherwise at the postcode's centre from the Office for National Statistics. What the ratings mean
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland businesses are rated from 0 to 5.
- 55 — Very good
- 44 — Good
- 33 — Generally satisfactory
- 22 — Improvement necessary
- 11 — Major improvement necessary
- 00 — Urgent improvement necessary
In Scotland, the Food Hygiene Information Scheme gives a result instead.
- ✓Pass — the business met the legal requirements for food hygiene
- ✓Pass and Eat Safe — a pass, and the business also holds the Eat Safe award for going beyond them
- !Improvement required — the business didn't meet the legal requirements
Your location
If you use “Near me” or “Go to my nearest town”, your browser asks before sharing your location. Once you've allowed it, search results are also listed nearest first. We never ask for your location just because you searched. It's used only on the page, to work out which businesses and towns are closest, and is never sent to us or anyone else.
Independence
This site is independent. It is not run by or affiliated with the Food Standards Agency or any council. Council logos are shown only to identify each council and belong to that council. Our copy can be up to a week behind, so check the official FSA website for the current rating.
Corrections
We republish council data as-is. If a rating is wrong, the business should contact its local council, which can arrange a re-inspection or publish a right to reply. If this site shows something different from the FSA record, or you'd like us to review a page, contact us.
For developers and AI assistants
The data is open. /llms.txt explains how the site is organised for AI assistants and agents, and search results are available as JSON: /search/?q=skipton&format=json. Please credit the Food Standards Agency and link to the business's page when you quote a rating.
