Privacy notice
What personal data this site handles, why, and your rights. Last updated 30 September 2026.
Who we are
hygienerating.co.uk is run by Codo Digital Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 12307247), Duke House, Duke Street, Skipton, BD23 2HQ, which is the controller of the personal data described here. We're registered with the Information Commissioner's Office, registration number ZC259284. To ask about your data or use your rights, contact us or email info@hygienerating.co.uk.
Visiting the site
The site is hosted by Netlify. Like any web server, Netlify records each request, including your IP address, the page asked for, the time and your browser's user agent. These logs are used to deliver the site, keep it secure and fix faults. Our legal basis is legitimate interests (running a working, secure website). Netlify keeps them for a short period under its own retention policy, and we don't use them to identify or profile visitors.
We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking, and the site sets no cookies.
Your location
“Near me” and “Go to my nearest town” use your browser's location feature, and your browser asks before sharing it. Your location is used only on the page, to work out which businesses and towns are closest. It's never sent to us or anyone else.
Light and dark mode
If you choose light or dark mode, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage so it applies on every page. It stays on your device and isn't sent to us. It's strictly necessary to provide the feature you asked for, so we don't ask for consent. You can clear it in your browser's settings.
The contact form
If you use the contact form, we receive what you enter: your email address, your name if you give it, the page you're asking about and your message. We use it only to reply and deal with your request. Our legal basis is legitimate interests (answering people who contact us), or a legal obligation where you're exercising a data protection right. Submissions are stored by Netlify and emailed to us, and we delete them 12 months after your request is dealt with.
The ratings data
Business details and ratings come from the Food Standards Agency's open data, published by local councils under the Open Government Licence. Some businesses trade under a person's name, so a business name can be personal data. We republish it because food hygiene ratings are public information that helps people choose where to eat. Our legal basis is legitimate interests. For businesses run from a home, the FSA publishes no street address and only the first part of the postcode, and we show the same.
We keep the details only while the FSA publishes them. When a business drops out of the FSA data, its page says it's no longer listed for a year, and is then removed. To correct a rating or the published details, contact the council that rated the business. To object to how we show a record, contact us.
Who we share data with
Netlify, Inc. hosts the site and stores contact form submissions for us, as our processor. Netlify is based in the United States and transfers data under safeguards recognised by UK data protection law. See Netlify's privacy policy. We don't sell personal data or share it with anyone else, unless the law requires us to.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your personal data, and ask us to correct it, delete it or restrict how we use it. Where we rely on legitimate interests, you can object. We'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (0303 123 1113).
